A 20-year career in the US Air Force showed Warren Councilman Bob Dean what retired veterans need.
"I've seen these guys, I know these guys," Dean said. "When they see something come through the door that they
weren't expecting, but you know the feeling you get when you get a gift from someone that you didn't even know cared
about you."
Dean and other city officials are taking donations to send to two veterans nursing homes in Ohio, one in Sandusky
and one in Cincinnati.
"We have almost 1,000 veterans in nursings homes in Ohio," Dean said. "We have the best nursing homes, the best
care, and I think that when we get our U-haul truck up there on Monday they are going to know there are people that
care about them."
He didn't realize it was going to be as busy as it was Friday afternoon, thinking they'd get a few donations. But then
Michael Primmer, president of VetAid National walked in with a $1,000 check.
"All I can say is, we're not looking for thanks to us at all." Primmer said. "We just want to help these guys in any way
we can. And we hope that they buy whatever they need and it meets their needs."
Both Dean and Primmer say this drive gives everyone something to be thankful for this holiday season.
"The people that have been coming in and out of here, you know what they are feeling. They are feeling, you know,
this gives me a chance to really give something in a tangible way," Dean said.
"YOU LAY YOUR HEAD DOWN AND PEOPLE OUT THERE LAY THEIR HEADS DOWN TO REST AND YOU KNOW
YOUR SAFE BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE THAT WENT BEFORE THEM AND MAINTAINED THEIR FREEDOMS,"
Primmer said.
